Building the Future of Transit: The Transdev Maintenance Apprenticeship Program

The Transdev Maintenance Apprenticeship Program at the Transdev-operated Fairfax Connector location in Virginia is shaping the future of transit. Launched in 2022, it’s the first program in Virginia to partner with the Department of Labor and the International Transit Learning Center (ITLC), training young adults as certified ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) technicians and maintenance workers.

Apprentices follow a structured one-year program that combines four days of hands-on mentorship and one day of classroom training each week. They shadow their mentors, working on buses and learning the ins and outs of transit maintenance. The apprentices follow their mentors’ shifts—whether early or late—getting used to the demanding 24/7 environment of a transit agency. Classroom sessions cover ASE test prep, technical skills, and professional development, with apprentices provided tools and curriculum to support their growth.

In addition to technical expertise, the program helps apprentices develop communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. Through partnerships with local unions, apprentices gain access to union benefits after 90 days of employment, adding long-term stability to their careers. Throughout the duration of the program, Transdev trains the apprentices in the skills necessary to pass a series of tests to become a certified ASE C-level maintenance technician. After they successfully complete the apprenticeship program and are ASE-certified, they transition to become C-level maintenance technicians with Transdev and receive a wage increase.

The program has become essential to Fairfax Connector’s operations, alleviating the workload of the maintenance team. Success, however, depends on the quality of the mentor-apprentice relationship. Mentors are carefully selected and trained to provide a positive and productive learning environment, as their habits and attitudes significantly influence the apprentice’s development.
Check-ins at 30, 60, and 90 days during the mentorship period help assess progress and provide feedback. The program has recently expanded its candidate selection process to focus on committed individuals who are dedicated to building a career in transit.
Recognized by Transdev’s executive leadership team, the Transdev Maintenance Apprenticeship Program has garnered praise for its structure and success. CEO Laura Hendricks highlighted the program on The Transit Authority podcast, commending its impact on the workforce and the industry.

In just a few years, the program has developed skilled technicians and become a valuable part of the Fairfax Connector, ensuring the future of both the local transit system and its workforce.
