Aveiro, Portugal
Aveirobus River Transport

Capable of carrying both passengers and vehicles, ferries help to greatly reduce the time needed to cross bodies of water such as the Aveirobus River Transport in Aveiro, Portugal.

Since 2017, Transdev has provided integrated urban, river, and long-haul transport services in Aveiro, Portugal. The urban transport fleet includes both fuel-powered and electric buses, offering flexible and sustainable mobility options for the city. In addition to buses, Transdev operates a ferry and two speedboats, connecting key areas across Aveiro’s canals and rivers such as Forte da Barra and Sao Jacinto, easing congestion, and promoting alternative travel routes. Transdev also manages long-haul services, ensuring seamless regional connectivity. This integrated transport network demonstrates Transdev’s commitment to sustainability, efficient mobility, and enhancing the overall passenger experience in Aveiro.

Every maritime connection is unique! Operating in 4 countries, providing over 23 million passenger trips on an annual basis, we have an in-depth understanding of the attention each region requires. Whatever standards we encounter, we start by analyzing the need for mobility to provide the most suitable maritime solution, taking into account the geographical area, the size of the population, and the needs of the passengers.

By doing so, we help local authorities craft their ferry operations in order to meet the needs of their passengers and local land transport networks. We have experience in providing both the vessels for our partners, as well as in operating and maintaining vessels that our public transit agency partners provide.

Gota River – Gothenburg, Sweden
Styrsöbolaget

Through our subsidiary, Styrsöbolaget, we proudly operate commuter ferry services across the Göta River in central Gothenburg, Sweden. This service connects the archipelago, countryside, and city, seamlessly integrating into the regional public transport system, which serves 1.5 million inhabitants across 49 urban districts. Guided by a vision of sustainable and fossil-free maritime traffic, we are advancing electrification at sea. By hybridizing existing ships, we extend their lifespan while reducing emissions, and our new vessels are increasingly fully electric.

In 2026, under a new agreement with Västtrafik, the six ferries crossing the Göta River will become fully electric, offering quieter, emission-free operations that benefit passengers, crews, and local residents. We also hybridize older vessels, such as the iconic Rex from 1937, enabling partial electric power and extending their lifespans. By delaying the need for new ship construction, we minimize environmental impact—because the most sustainable ship is one that doesn’t need to be built.

Sydney, Australia
Sydney Harbor

Transdev Sydney Harbor ferries have been operating nine different classes of vessels out of 38 wharves moving 15.5 million customers each year around the beautiful Sydney Harbor and along the Parramatta River since 2012. Most recently noted, the entire fleet is set to be replaced by an emissions-free fleet by 2035, with electric or hydrogen-powered vessels being considered. The new fleet will maintain the iconic design of the current ferries, making them as noticeable on the water as they have been over the last 12 years. This shift to greener transportation will be managed by Transdev Australasia, the operator of Sydney Ferries, who will consider major upgrades to wharves and charging facilities as expected.
