Strengthening Rail Infrastructure: Transdev Rail Division’s Bridge Redecking Project with the Pacific Harbor Line

Transdev’s rail division is redecking two rail bridges as part of Pacific Harbor Line’s (PHL) track rehabilitation project for the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles—key intermodal gateways in the United States. The work being performed on the 500-foot single-track Dominguez Bridge and 800-foot double-track Badger Bridge includes replacing 9-by-9-by-12-foot timber ties and 20-foot catwalk ties on both bridge decks.

Work on the bridges is performed during 12-hour windows over a three- to four-week period per bridge, minimizing operational disruptions. Once complete, the upgrades will ensure the long-term durability of the structures.

Employee safety is a top priority on any Transdev rail project, but this focus becomes even more crucial with complex bridge work. Chris Burgess, General Manager of Transdev’s rail division, emphasized the importance of safety in every aspect of the project.

“Ensuring the safety of our workforce is paramount,” said Burgess. “Bridge work presents unique challenges, and our team is highly trained to operate in these conditions. Every team member is outfitted with fall protection, and we enforce strict safety protocols to ensure they can perform their work efficiently and without risk. Their dedication to maintaining the highest safety standards allows us to complete critical infrastructure projects while prioritizing the well-being of our employees.”

Pacific Harbor Line connects two Class I railroads, nine intermodal terminals, and numerous carload customers. These tie replacement and redecking upgrades enhance freight efficiency and reliability, reinforcing Transdev’s commitment to long-term rail sustainability.

This project is driven by a skilled team whose expertise ensures these critical bridges remain safe and operational for years to come.

At Transdev, we are committed to providing safe, reliable, and sustainable mobility solutions. This project aligns with our mission of enhancing transportation infrastructure, ensuring efficient movement of goods that support communities and economies. By maintaining and improving these vital rail connections, Transdev continues to drive progress in freight mobility and public transit, strengthening the foundation for future growth.
