Transdev Supports Seamless MetroAccess Transition For WMATA
Washington, D.C. – When the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) required a new operating partner for MetroAccess paratransit service on an accelerated timeline, Transdev was ready to help ensure a smooth transition for the thousands of customers who rely on the service every day.
Drawing on its extensive paratransit expertise and existing partnership with WMATA, Transdev successfully launched MetroAccess operations in just a few weeks while maintaining continuity of service across the Washington, D.C., region.
Within 30 days, Transdev established a new operation, building a workforce of more than 530 employees, including more than 430 drivers and 105 support staff.
Establishing Operations on an Accelerated Timeline
The transition began at a facility in Capitol Heights, Maryland, which required significant preparation before service could begin.
Following authorization to proceed, Transdev transformed the property into a fully functioning operating center and launched service just weeks later. In its first week, the team successfully operated more than 100 routes while recruiting, hiring, training, and onboarding hundreds of employees.
Shortly after the initial launch, WMATA expanded Transdev’s role to include additional MetroAccess operations in Springfield, Virginia, requiring the team to establish a second operating location while continuing to support ongoing service delivery.
Today, Transdev operates MetroAccess services from facilities in Capitol Heights, Maryland, and Springfield, Virginia. Together, the two locations support a fleet of 357 vehicles serving customers throughout the WMATA service area.
Supporting One of the Nation’s Largest Paratransit Operations
MetroAccess is one of the largest paratransit services in the United States, providing approximately 10,000 trips each day for customers across the region.
The successful transition was made possible through close collaboration between local leadership and Transdev’s corporate support teams, including Human Resources, Performance, Business Solutions, Operations, Safety, and Training. Their coordinated efforts helped establish the operation while maintaining a focus on service quality, employee readiness, and customer experience.
”This was an extraordinary team effort. Everyone remained focused on the same goal: providing safe, reliable transportation for MetroAccess customers and supporting WMATA’s commitment to accessible mobility.”

Building on an Existing Partnership
Transdev’s relationship with WMATA extends beyond transportation operations. The company has also operated the WMATA MetroAccess Call Center for the past two years, providing valuable operational knowledge and continuity throughout the transition process.
While establishing the operation was an important milestone, the team’s focus is on the future. Transdev continues to invest in workforce development, operational performance, safety initiatives, and customer service enhancements designed to support WMATA’s mobility goals and improve the rider experience.
Since assuming responsibility for MetroAccess service, Transdev has delivered strong operational results while continuing to strengthen processes, develop its workforce, and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
”We’re proud of what our team has accomplished, but we’re even more focused on what comes next. Our commitment is to continue delivering safe, dependable, and high-quality service for MetroAccess customers every day.”
