Safety Tip- Always Use the 6-Second Rule for Following Distance

Safety Corner

As an operator, keeping a safe distance is one of the best ways to prevent accidents.  It shows calm, professional driving, and it gives you the time and space needed to react safely. Even if another driver makes a mistake, you still need enough space to avoid potential collisions or hard braking events.

Your vehicle is much bigger than a car, and it takes longer to stop safely.  Our Safety First! culture reminds operators to:

  • Allow 4-6 seconds of following distance when empty and conditions are good.
  • Increase your following distance when passengers are in your vehicle.
  • Increase your following distance even more in bad weather or low visibility conditions.

A safe following distance gives you time, space, and control.  It helps you avoid sudden braking, keeps passengers comfortable, and prevents accidents.  Safety First!
