Transdev’s Golden Safety Rule #2 reminds us that staying healthy, both physically and mentally, is part of working safely. Mental Health Awareness Month is a good reminder that taking care of your mind is just as important as taking care of your body.
Mental Health by the Numbers
Mental health challenges are more common than many people think. According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health:
- About 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. will experience a mental health condition in any given year.
- 46% of people will deal with a mental health condition at some point in their life, and many start before age 14.
- 59.3 million adults report having a mental illness.
- 42.5 million adults report an anxiety‑related condition.
- 22.5 million adults have been diagnosed with depression.
- 13.2 million adults experience frequent suicidal thoughts.
These numbers show that mental health struggles are widespread and have are nothing to be ashamed of.
Spotting Stress and Burnout
Stress happens to everyone, but when it builds up, it can affect your safety, focus, and well‑being. Watch for signs like:
- Feeling overwhelmed or unusually tired
- Trouble focusing
- Feeling irritated or frustrated more easily
- Pulling away from coworkers or activities
- Changes in sleep or appetite
Catching these signs early helps you reset before things get worse.
Simple Habits That Make a Difference
Small steps can help protect your mental well‑being:
- Take short breaks during your shift
- Keep clear boundaries between work time and personal time
- Move your body: stretch, walk, or do light activity
- Try deep breathing or mindfulness
- Reach out for support when you need it
You do not have to tackle everything alone.
We Are All Human
Everyone faces challenges. Everyone deserves support. When we look out for each other and talk openly about mental health, we create a workplace where people feel valued, respected, and safe.
