Black History Month: Celebrating Granville T. Woods: A Railroad Inventor Who Changed the World

Safety Corner

As we continue to honor Black History Month, we celebrate Granville T. Woods, a Black inventor who made trains safer and faster. People called him the “Black Edison” because his work harnessing electricity earned him nearly 60 patents.

He is responsible for inventing the Third Rail System that gives power to trains.  This invention is still used today in subways and railroads. Woods also developed the Railway Telegraph, which helped trains talk to stations and avoid crashes.

Granville T. Woods shows us how big ideas and hard work can change the world around us.  At Transdev, we are proud to honor inventors who empower us with the freedom to move!
