January 11: National Human Trafficking Awareness Day

Safety Corner

Did you know? January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month and January 11th is designated as National Human Trafficking Awareness Day.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security defines human trafficking as involving the use of force, fraud, or coercion to obtain some type of labor or commercial sex act. Every year, millions of men, women, and children are trafficked worldwide. The recognition day was established in 2010.

Traffickers often use transportation hubs and public transit to recruit and transport victims – most of the time in plain sight. Our industry is uniquely positioned to recognize the signs and report this crime.

Some signs individuals may display can include:

  • Show signs of fear, anxiety, tension
  • Sign of physical abuse, restraint, and/or confinement
  • Sign of malnourishment, pure hygiene and fatigue
  • Lack of freedom to move; being constantly monitored
  • Avoid eye contact with others
  • Have few or no personal items (purse/wallet, ID, money)

The U.S. Department of Transportation has created their “Put the Brakes On” campaign. Learn more: https://www.transportation.gov/TLAHT.

Information can also be found here on the Department of Homeland Security site under their “Wear Blue” campaign to raise awareness. The number set up to report a suspected trafficking issue is 1-866-347-2423

Since we can all do our part…this is also a great time to ensure you’ve completed our Human Trafficking Awareness and Public Safety Campaign training that’s available on LEARN (https://www.transdevelearning.net).
