Julio Velasquez, Safety Manager for San Trans Microtransit, is proud of his Costa Rican roots and the values they have carried throughout his life and career. He immigrated from Costa Rica to the United States more than 40 years ago. For him, Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to celebrate the contributions Hispanic and Latino communities make every day.
“I feel very thankful that my heritage is valued and celebrated in the United States,” Julio said.
Growing up, Julio learned the importance of hard work through his family’s coffee business. During school breaks, he helped pick coffee beans and deliver coffee to Indigenous communities in Costa Rica. Those experiences taught him responsibility and perseverance at an early age. Transportation also runs in Julio’s family. Several of his uncles worked as professional operators, helping inspire his own career journey.
Julio began his professional career as a radio announcer in New York before relocating to California and entering the transportation industry. Over time, he developed a passion for safety and leadership. In 2016, he joined Transdev as a Safety Manager after being encouraged to pursue the role instead of a bus operator position.
Julio credits his Hispanic heritage for shaping his leadership style.
“We are passionate people. We take pride in our culture and work hard at everything we do,” he said.
When he first arrived in the U.S., Julio faced challenges with the English language, but the support and patience of others helped him build confidence and succeed. One thing he wishes more people knew about Hispanic culture is its ability to bring people together, especially through music. Julio is inspired by Tito Puente, the legendary Puerto Rican drummer and bandleader whose influence helped bring Latin music to audiences across the United States. He admires how Puente used music to connect people from different backgrounds and showcase the richness of Hispanic culture.
“I love the music from my culture. When I hear it, I can’t help but dance,” Julio said.
His advice to fellow Hispanic and Latino employees is simple:
“Continue to work hard, be yourself, and take pride in your culture.”
As Transdev celebrates Latino Heritage Month, Julio’s story highlights how pride in one’s culture, dedication to hard work, and a passion for helping others can inspire success and make a lasting impact.
Transdev is proud to honor leaders like Julio in celebration of Latino Heritage Month!
