See Tracks? Think Train® Week: Rail Safety Starts with You

Safety Corner

Safety is our number one priority, and during See Tracks? Think Train® Week, we join Operation Lifesaver in raising awareness about the importance of rail safety and encouraging everyone to make safe choices around railroad crossings and tracks. Trains are larger, heavier, and quieter than many people realize, making it a good reason to stay alert whenever you are near rail property.

For operators, practicing safe behaviors around railroad crossings can help prevent serious incidents and protect passengers, pedestrians, and fellow road users.

Rail Safety Tips for Operators

  • Always expect a train. Trains can operate on any track, in either direction, and at any time.
  • Stay focused near railroad crossings. Avoid distractions and give your full attention to the road and crossing signals.
  • Obey all warning devices. Never cross when lights are flashing, bells are sounding, or gates are lowered.
  • Never try to beat a train. Even if a train appears far away, it may be traveling faster than it seems.
  • Make sure there is enough room to clear the tracks completely before crossing. Never stop your vehicle on the tracks.
  • Be alert for multiple trains. A second train may be approaching on a nearby track after the first train passes.
  • Know your route. Be aware of railroad crossings along your route and approach them with caution.

Every safe decision keeps our employees, passengers, and communities protected. This See Tracks? Think Train® Week, remember: tracks are for trains, and safety is everyone’s responsibility. Safety First!
