Safety Tip- Always Aim High in Steering

Safety Corner

Aiming High in Steering means looking at least 15 seconds ahead of your vehicle at all times.

Your eyes naturally focus three to six feet ahead, so you must train yourself to look farther down the road to keep Safety First!

When you aim high, you can:

  • Spot hazards early, like stopped traffic, hazards, lane closures, and unsafe drivers.
  • Make smooth adjustments instead of hard braking.
  • Avoid sudden steering movements that can cause loss of control or collisions.

To see 15 seconds ahead, you need space. If your view is blocked, you lose the ability to plan ahead.

Aiming high also helps you “Get the Big Picture”. When you look further ahead, you can better track:

  • Traffic flow
  • Road conditions
  • Pedestrians and cyclists
  • Weather impacts
  • Developing hazards

Stay aware of factors that can limit your view, including:

  • Following too closely in heavy traffic
  • Fatigue or distractions

Recognizing these risks helps you adjust and stay in control. Look farther ahead, stay proactive, and make safer decisions. Safety First!
