Safety Tip – Drive First, Talk Later

Safety Corner

Talking with passengers can help build trust and make the ride more enjoyable.  A quick, friendly comment can calm nerves and create a welcoming environment.  But even good conversation can become a distraction behind the wheel.  Transdev’s Golden Safety Rules remind us that staying focused and alert is always a top priority when operating a Transdev vehicle.

Light Conversation

A short, friendly exchange can make a big difference for a passenger, especially when they seem nervous or unsure.  A simple greeting or comment can help them relax and feel comfortable.

Light conversations work best when:

  • It is brief and easy to follow
  • It avoids emotional or heated topics
  • It does not take your attention off the road

When used the right way, conversations with passengers support great customer service without affecting safety.

Avoiding Distractions

Friendly communication is helpful, but it becomes unsafe when it interferes with driving.  Operators should never feel pressured to continue a conversation that takes their focus off the road.

Operators should pause all conversations when they are:

  • Loading and unloading passengers
  • Approaching or crossing railroad tracks
  • Anytime the vehicle is in motion
  • Any situation that needs extra focus

Even well-meaning conversations can increase safety risks if it distracts from important tasks.

Operators should keep these safety habits in mind when speaking with passengers:

  • Keep conversations short and positive
  • Politely pause or redirect conversations when needed
  • Avoid emotional or hot topics
  • Always put safety first

Knowing when to talk and when not to helps keep everyone safe.  Safety First!
