Safety First! April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month

Safety Corner

April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, a reminder that staying alert on the road is one of the most important parts of our job.  Our Golden Safety Rules support the responsibility we all share to protect ourselves and others when on the road. When we practice safe driving habits every time we get behind the wheel, we reduce risks and make sure everyone gets to their location safely.

Distracted Driving Facts

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that 3,275 people were killed in distracted driving-related crashes in 2023. While cell phone use is a big concern, distracted driving includes much more than that.  Many distractions can easily be overlooked.

Common distractions include:

  • Trying to multitask instead of focusing on just driving
  • Eating or drinking
  • Loud music
  • Talking with passengers
  • Mental distractions like daydreaming

How to Stay Focused

You can improve your focus by building simple, consistent habits like:

  • Setting up before you move – adjust mirrors, seats, and temperature before moving
  • Keeping music levels low
  • Avoid drinking and eating while in motion
  • Avoiding multitasking
  • Avoid driving while tired
  • Limiting conversations with passengers
  • Remaining mentally present

Distracted Driving Resources

The National Safety Council’s initiative to raise awareness of distracted driving include resources you can access to help improve your knowledge and to improve safe driving habits.

Safety Resources

Rember, every moment behind the wheel carries our responsibility.  Staying alert and focused helps you avoid distractions and protects you, your passengers, and your vehicle. Safety First!
