Safety Tip – Know and Follow Your Hours of Service

Safety Corner

Hours of Service (HoS) rules are an important part of operating safely and legally as a professional driver. These rules come from federal law and apply to anyone driving a passengercarrying commercial motor vehicle (CMV) under the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). HoS rules help operators follow consistent limits on driving and onduty time. They also help protect you and the company from receiving violations that can lead to serious penalties.

As an operator, it is important to understand the HoS rules and how they apply to your work at Transdev.  Operators are not allowed to drive a passenger-carrying vehicle when:

  • They have driven more than 10 hours
  • They have been on duty for 15 hours, regardless of how much of that time was driving
  • They have been on duty 60 hours in 7 days or 70 hours in 8 days

Operators may continue performing nondriving work after reaching the daily driving limit, but those hours still count toward the total weekly onduty hours. All operators must follow these rules, even if they are not driving a U.S. Department of Transportationregulated vehicle.

Operators share equal responsibility for following HoS rules. This includes:

  • Keeping track of all onduty and driving time
  • Staying within daily and weekly limits
  • Reporting all outside employment

Any job you work for pay, whether you are driving or not, counts toward your total weekly hours. All outside work must be reported to Transdev and updated before your next shift if anything changes. If you have a second job, those hours must be included in your weekly total.

By following the Hours of Service rules, you keep yourself and passengers safe.  Safety First!
