Staying safe on the road starts with remembering that driving is your Number One job. When you try to do more than one thing at a time, like checking a text message, preparing paperwork, or thinking about another task, your brain must switch back and forth. This slows your reaction time and increases possible risk.
Our Golden Safety Rules remind us to always stay focused and alert when operating a vehicle.
Stay Focused and Avoid Distractions
As an operator, avoiding distractions while working can help you avoid mistakes and keep Safety First! To stay focused, operators should:
- “Just Drive.” Do all non‑driving tasks before you shift into gear.
- Silence and put your phone away. Even a quick look can take your attention off the road.
- Set up your cab before you leave. Adjust your mirrors, seat, radio, and route information while parked.
- Avoid mental multitasking. If your mind drifts to other tasks, bring your focus back to the road.
- Know the risk. Multitasking overloads your brain and makes it harder to make safe decisions.
Protect yourself, your passengers, and others on the road by avoiding distractions and staying alert. Safety First!
