Black History Month Spotlight Feature on David Johnson, General Manager

Safety Corner

Every career has a story, and during Black History Month, we’re proud to share the stories of team members who inspire through their dedication and leadership. For David Johnson, Assistant General Manager at our Houston Fixed Route location, that story is rooted in family history that includes his father who worked as a commercial bus operator.  This early exposure to the industry turned into a deep interest in how transportation connects people, creates opportunities, and strengthens communities.

Throughout his career, David has focused on results without making excuses. He puts his energy into finding solutions and moving forward. This approach has shaped the way he leads teams, supports clients, and handles the challenges that come with the industry.

The values he learned as a child still guide him today. He was taught to work hard, look out for others, and pursue his education. These lessons helped build his strong work ethic and his desire to keep learning. David sees his work as part of a larger mission: making sure communities have reliable transportation that supports jobs, education, and opportunities for growth.

Early in his career, he learned an important lesson common in service industries: the client is always right. Understanding this helped him grow professionally and taught him how to build strong, lasting relationships.

One of the most rewarding parts of his job has been watching people he hired grow in their careers. Some still reach out years later to thank him for giving them their start. To David, transportation has always been about people, including the employees who keep everything running and the passengers who depend on the service every day.

Mentorship is also a big part of David’s leadership journey. As a former president of COMTO, he worked to introduce young Black professionals to the transportation field. He believes the industry isn’t promoted enough to emerging leaders, and he continues to push for more visibility, mentorship, and access to opportunities.

Looking to the future, David hopes to leave behind a workplace culture where new leaders take responsibility, solve problems, and support one another. His message to young people considering a career in transportation is simple: this industry offers meaningful, stable, and impactful work. It gives you the chance to serve your community by helping people get where they need to go safely and reliably. With accountability, mentorship, and a willingness to take on new challenges, transportation can become a long-term career full of growth and leadership opportunities.

Transdev is proud to celebrate and support leaders like David who live out their Purpose with meaningful impact in celebration of Black History Month!
