Safety Tip: Prepare for Winter Weather Hazards

Safety Corner

Winter brings extra challenges for everyone on the road. As an operator, staying alert and adjusting your habits can make the difference between a safe trip and a dangerous situation.

What to Watch For

  • Icy Roads: Surfaces can be slick even when they look clear. Slow down and avoid sudden turns or stops.
  • Poor Visibility: Snow, fog, and shorter daylight hours reduce what you can see. Keep headlights on and stay focused.
  • Watch for Changing Traffic Patterns: Weather delays and holiday crowds can cause unpredictable traffic. Stay patient and give yourself extra time.

Driving Safely

  • Drive cautiously and reduce speed when conditions are poor.
  • Allow extra stopping distance. Driving on icy roads means it takes longer to stop safely.
  • Stay alert for pedestrians who may also be struggling with slippery sidewalks.

Passenger Safety

  • Watch for slip-and-fall hazards when passengers board or exit your vehicle.
  • Remind riders to hold handrails and step carefully.
  • Keep entryways clear of snow, ice, or water whenever possible.

Winter weather can be tough, but preparation and caution keep everyone safe. By driving carefully, giving yourself space to stop, and watching out for passenger slips, you protect yourself, your riders, and your community.  Safety First!
