Safety Tip: Drive Smart After Dark

Safety Corner

When the clocks change in the fall, it gets dark much earlier. Driving after dark can be harder and more dangerous. People walking are harder to see, and weather like rain, fog, or snow can make it worse.

Most pedestrian accidents happen between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. and again later at night. Drivers may also be tired or distracted, especially during the busy holiday season. This makes it easier to miss signs, lights, or people crossing the street.

As an operator, you can stay safe by clearing your windows and mirrors before driving, checking blind spots carefully, and staying focused on the road. Slow down when visibility is poor, watch closely for pedestrians and cyclists, and give other drivers plenty of space.

By paying extra attention after dark and keeping Safety First!, you protect yourself, your passengers, and your community.
