Keeping Safety First! is Transdev’s number one goal. When assisting passengers using mobility devices, remember to put your training into practice and secure them properly. Be sure to use all the pieces in the securement system which includes:
- Three or four device securement straps, depending on your vehicle’s floor securement points
- Lap belt
- Shoulder belt
When attaching a floor strap, be sure to:
- Never cross members under the mobility device or a moveable/removable part of the device.
- Never pass securement straps through wheels or crossing belts.
When using a direct path securement method, never tie or wrap straps around a mobility device. Secure straps from the floor to the most direct welded joint of the mobility device to keep passengers using their devices safely.
As an operator, you may have challenges with securing passengers with mobility devices, like:
- Mobility device size and/or design
- Passenger size
- Passenger belongings and/or medical equipment
Knowing how to properly secure passengers and their devices, even during challenging moments, is vital. When hooks cannot attach or it becomes impossible to connect securement straps to the frame of a mobility device, use Quick Straps instead.
Passengers using mobility devices with only three wheels should be asked to transfer to a seat if able to do so unassisted. If the passenger does not want to move to another seat, use the four-strap securement system combined with Quick Straps for added security. Safety First!
