At the Zip location in Beaumont, Texas, Transdev employees are coming together to make a real difference in their community. What started as a simple breakroom conversation has grown into the Zip Community Outreach Team—a group of coworkers who volunteer their time to support local families, seniors, and neighbors in need. From school supply giveaways to disaster relief efforts, this team is showing how small actions can lead to a big impact.
Denise Moore, operator and volunteer, shared how the Zip Community Outreach Team began, “Once we got together and began to discuss how we could serve others, a lot of our coworkers jumped in. It grew from there, and everybody helped out.”
Focused on Community
In August, the outreach team organized a Back-to-School event for local residents, giving away more than 75 backpacks filled with school supplies. Residents also had a chance to tour the Zip bus, putting smiles on the faces of visiting children and their parents.
“It was good to see the kids smiling, and seeing the parents smile, knowing that was a burden they didn’t have to worry about. It was great to give from the kindness of our hearts. That’s what really matters to us,” said Moore.
Making a Difference
Since the Zip Community Outreach team began, they have continued to create events and projects that matter to the community the most. Earlier this year, the team planned a project called Caring for Our Fellow Texans to assist residents affected by flooding in central Texas. The team raised donations to collect needed items from other Transdev employees and gave them to a local charity partner that directly helps flood victims.
Claudia San Miguel, General Manager, praises her team for helping those in need.
“We want to be more than just transit people. We want to be seen as good neighbors, and if we can contribute more, we will do it,” said San Miguel.
What’s Next
Operators and volunteers Denise Moore, Liza Harmond, and Jessica Johnson meet often to discuss who they are going to help next. The team plans to give out candy to passengers while leaving the bus for Halloween, delivering more smiles to the faces of residents.
For the upcoming holiday season, the Zip Community Outreach team plans to support seniors by collecting employee donations for needed items and giving them to their local nursing home partners.
“We are in talks with the director of a nursing home to find out how many residents we can provide support for. Around the holidays, seniors don’t get the attention they should, so we want to give back to them as well,” said Harmond.
