Celebrating AANHPI Heritage Month Spotlight: Bill Naito, Public Transit Advocate

Safety Corner

As we celebrate Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month, Transdev reflects on the contributions of Bill Naito (1925-1996), Public Transit Advocate.

Bill Naito was a transit leader in Portland, Oregon, whose legacy as a businessman, civic leader, and public transit advocate continues to shape the city.  Born to Japanese immigrant parents, Naito’s early life was marked by adversity, including displacement following Japan’s attack at Pearl Harbor in 1941, leading to World War II.

He is best known for his work in developing Portland’s public transportation network.  He supported the creation of the Metropolitan Area Express (MAX) light rail system, which began operating in 1986 and has become the city’s backbone of its transit system. He was also a key figure in establishing the Portland Vintage Trolley service in 1991.  His vision laid the groundwork for the modern Portland Streetcar system and Transdev is proud to celebrate Bill Naito in honor of AAANHPI Heritage Month.
