Breast Cancer Awareness Wednesday: Health Equity

Safety Corner

Everyone carries their own combination of risk for breast cancer. Studies have shown unacceptable inequities in breast cancer outcomes do exist including:

  • Hispanic/Latina women are more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer later than white women.
  • Black women are about 40% more likely to die of breast cancer than white women.
  • Lesbian and bisexual women get fewer breast cancer screenings due to fear of discrimination or having negative experiences with health care providers.
  • Uninsured women are screened for breast cancer at lower rates than women with health insurance.

Transdev is partnering with Susan G. Komen on an effort to bring awareness to breast cancer during October. Komen, through its Health Equity for All initiative, is working to eliminate barriers to care for individuals and communities experiencing breast health inequities.
