In Case of Heat Stress, Find a Cool Area, Drink Water & Apply a Cool Cloth to Beat the Heat

Safety Corner

For Week 4 of our Beat the Heat summer theme, we are offering actions and tips to take when dealing with heat-related illness.

It’s important to call 911 when you suspect heat-related illness. Serious symptoms include confusion, altered mental state, slurred speech, loss of consciousness, seizures and hot/dry skin.

TIP: First and foremost – cooling is key. Do what you can to help cool the affected person bring their body temperature down. Use cold compresses (on their neck, head, armpits), spray them with water, create an ice bath, circulate cold air around them and remove tight fitting clothing. Stay with them until help arrives.
