Beat the Heat #2: Preventing Heat Stress

Safety Corner

Our next Beat the Heat subtopic offers a reminder of things to keep in mind to prevent heat stress.

Heat stress occurs when the body cannot get rid of excess heat. When this happens, the body’s core temperature rises and the heart rate increases. As the body continues to store heat, the person begins to lose concentration and has difficulty focusing on a task, may become irritable or sick, and often loses the desire to drink.

It’s important to recognize the symptoms of heat stress and pace your work by taking adequate rest periods in the shade or cooler places. It’s also important to drink plenty of water and wear loose fitted clothing.
