Turning School Bus Stops into Food Distribution Centers in Allegheny County

Safety Corner

Our IntelliRide team made the news as a result of their community support efforts during the pandemic.

Challenge: There was clearly still a clear need to get food out to people throughout Allegheny County in Pennsylvania during these trying times.

Solution: Leverage Penn Hills’ existing 5 school bus routes and their 35 stops and use them as “Food Distribution Centers” for free lunch pick-ups.

Since July 1, 2020, by working with the Allegheny County Department of Human Services, IntelliRide’s ACCESS drivers follow the bus routes (each has seven stops) carrying free lunches for pick up. Each stop has signage indicating when and where the vans will arrive. After the first week, close to 1,300 lunches were delivered.

Greg Ikper, an ACCESS driver with East Liberty’s PRN Health Service, said “…I enjoy this. I am able, through the company I work for, provide a need to people who really need it.”
