After 50 Years and a Day, Harry Burnell, Who Began as a Driver, Retiring From Transdev

Safety Corner

Do you remember where you were February 25, 1970? Harry Burnell does. He had just gotten out of the Army and was deciding what his next move will be.

Lucky for Transdev, Harry decided to join South Carolina Electric & Gas as a bus driver. At that time, SCEG also ran Charleston’s transportation. It was a good thing for us that SCEG paid $.10 more an hour ($1.70/hour) than Western Electric did at the time—Harry’s second choice.

Over his 50 years, Harry has seen so much change and so much progress in the transportation industry.

Harry was a bus driver for 20 years, before he assumed the role of operations manager in 1990. In 1999, when the Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA) was formed and Transdev took over operations, he became the lead supervisor—a position he holds today where he supervises 125 bus and 25 paratransit drivers.

In an age where longevity at one company isn’t as common as it once was, it’s refreshing to hear the reasons behind Harry long-term commitment to Transdev. “It’s about the people—it’s always been about the people,” Harry explained. “This company is like family—we are treated well and work well together. When I started, even our customers left like extensions of my family.”

Megan Ross, CARTA operations manager, said “it’s Harry that has helped build that family culture. He has always been available to help, train, coach our drivers and supervisors.” David Bonner, CARTA general manager, echoed that sentiment and added, “his daily interactions with people and his ability to address issues directly, yet compassionately, can’t be taught; it just comes naturally to him. You can never replace 50+ years of knowledge and experience – he will be missed.”

“Transdev gave me lots of opportunities and for that I am grateful,” Harry continued to say. “I have been lucky to work with wonderful people, some of whom I have worked with for more than 30 years. Not too many people have that chance.” And now, with more than 3 million miles under his belt, Harry is excited to start his retirement 50 years and a 1 day after his journey began.

He’s looking forward to more time with his wife of 50 years. He also can’t wait to spend more time with his four grandchildren.

Harry’s leadership and dedication to Transdev and to the industry are appreciated and will be missed. We wish him a healthy, happy and fulfilling retirement. Sounds like he is well on his way.
