Transit Management Contracts – Managing Public Assets
A Management Contract is the private sector management of public employees and assets.
In the late 1970s as cities and counties purchased privately owned transit systems as a means of preserving and expanding public transit to meet a larger social purpose, a need developed to apply private management principles to publicly owned and operated services. Today, contract management is one method used by cities to insure the managerial talent and technical resources are available to support the operation of its transit system. Transdev North America, through its subsidiary PTM, has been providing this talent and support for over twenty years to clients from Nassau County and Phoenix to Cincinnati and Richmond.
Transit Management contracts are designed to meet the unique management needs of the organization. Usually consisting of only senior leadership positions, Transdev provides the management of the public system and its employees. Transdev North America manages the public budget as if it were our own, providing the talent necessary to lead the public agency.
The technical expertise needed to effectively manage a transit system cannot always be found within the public agency. Instead of staffing an agency to provide every conceivable resource, one of the advantages of a transit management contract is that it can be designed to fill in leadership gaps by adding Transdev resources and expertise.
One such area typically found in management contracts is the need for labor services. Our Transdev labor expertise can be added as a service, provided in addition to a resident Transdev management team. Other such services include training programs, service planning, safety audits, triennial review audits, technology reviews, procurement assistance and Board retreats, to name a few. A transit management client gets the leadership they need, the added resources available through the world’s largest transit operator, and the security of knowing its risks and resources are being managed by a professional organization.
Through this solution the client gets experienced transit management talent utilizing private sector methods and technical services.
